Sting’s Guy raises $12,555 through Movember campaign

Ontario Hockey League

Sarnia Sting forward Brayden Guy invested in a cause near and dear to his heart and has raised $12,555 in support of men’s mental health awareness and suicide prevention through his Movember campaign.

The 19-year-old ran 60 kilometres throughout the month of November, one for each of the men who lose their life to suicide every hour. While he was running, he thought of his uncle Neil who took his own life in May of 2019.

“We got pretty close over the years,” Guy said of his uncle. “Obviously it was a devastating for me and my family. Once I got over the initial tough grieving process, and obviously grieving never goes away, but once I got over the initial stage I wanted to use the social media platforms given to us as athletes in the OHL to raise awareness because I know it impacts so many people.”

Guy benefitted from the assistance of his family along with Sting director of marketing and corporate partnerships Jake Bourrie, who helped him put a plan in place.

For every kilometre he ran, he put five dollars toward his campaign through his Movember page. It didn’t take long for support to come rolling in for a cause Guy poured his entire month into. Donations along the way came from OHL graduates-turned NHL stars Ryan Strome and Corey Perry.

“I raised more in the first 24 hours than I initially had planned,” he said. “This was more to spread the word and raise awareness; I thought the donations would be a small part of it on the side. Given the amount of friends and family that have donated, it’s been pretty overwhelming.

“I don’t think this is going to be the first year I’m going to do this or the only year,” he added. “Hopefully we can just keep adding to this total in years to come.”
