The Sarnia Sting hosted the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Thursday night.
We were pumped to open 2019 with a classic West division matchup at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
In the first period, we all know who opened the scoring: Hugo Leufvenius, of course. Just over a minute into the game, Leufvenius took a perfect pass from captain and linemate Ryan McGregor. Wide open at the top of the Soo crease, Leufvenius had a tap-in past Greyhounds goalie Matthew Villalta. 1-0.
Ryan Roth tied the game for Sault Ste. Marie, but our top line was back at it shortly after.
This time it was McGregor’s turn to find twine. Sting forward Sean Josling carried the puck into the offensive zone and dished to Leufvenius. Our towering Swedish sniper then dished a saucer up to McGregor, who swiftly redirected the puck past Villalta. A beauty goal put us ahead 2-1 after one period of play.
Moving into the second, we continued to push the pace. But, the Greyhounds got another one on the board. Soo defenceman Jordan Sambrook took a hard shot through traffic that snuck by Sting netminder Ethan Langevin. After two periods, we had a 2-2 game.
In the third, things got real busy. Sting forward Curtis Egert gave us a 3-2 lead. After a huge scramble in front of Villalta, Egert jammed in the loose disc. Egert’s tenth of the season put us back in front.
We then had an incredibly exciting sequence that resulted in Sting blueliner Colton Kammerer recording his first tally of the season. After some huge saves by Langevin in our own end, Sarnia forward Franco Sproviero led a charge down the ice. Sproviero dished a perfectly placed pass to Kammerer, who went low past Villalta. 4-2.
Sault Ste. Marie got goals from Roman Pucek and Joe Carroll late in the third to send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Sting had multiple chances, including a hard blast from defenceman Kelton Hatcher. But, the Soo finished the night off with a goal from Keeghan Howdeshell. Tonight’s final score was 5-4.
