The Sarnia Sting took on the Erie Otters on Saturday night at Erie Insurance Arena in the Otters’ annual Teddy Bear Toss game in support of the Salvation Army.
The Sting come into this contest riding a four game winning streak and would look to continue to ride that momentum as Justin Fazio would get his second start in as many nights.
Sarnia would come out flying in this one with three high quality scoring opportunities in the opening :30 seconds of the game but Otters’ net minder Troy Timpano would stand tall shutting the door. Erie would respond for their goaltender as Alex Gritz would tip one past Fazio and cue the bears at the EIA.
After a lengthy cleanup play resumed and the Sting would begin to find their feet mounting several opportunities before heading into the room down one after one.
Jordan Ernst would notch his 14th of the season just 2:35 into the second frame after a slick Franco Sproviero feed from behind the net.
Veteran Otters forward Taylor Raddysh would restore the Erie lead. Parked in front of Fazio, Raddysh was able to jam it home 9:10 into the second period.
Traffic in front of Timpano would prove to be the key to Sting success as a pair of deflection goals would give the Sting a 3-2 lead. The first coming from Drake Rymsha after a Connor Schlichting point shot & Jordan Ernst would tally his second of the night (15th of the year).
With 3:57 remaining in the game Taylor Raddysh would dance into the slot and put one upstairs to tie the game at 3.
It seemed as though we would need extra hockey to solve this one until Sean Josling and Hugo Leufvenius would connect on a pretty give-and-go giving the Sting a 4-3 lead with just 2:12 remaining in the game, for Leufvenius that’s his fourth goal in the last three contests.
With the empty net the Otters would try to get one past Fazio but to no success and the Sting would win their 5th straight moving to 21-4-1, sitting atop the Ontario Hockey League standings.
