GAME REPORT | Sting Retire Stamkos’ 91, Power Over Spitfires 6-1

The Sarnia Sting hosted the Windsor Spitfires on Friday night.

It was a special evening at Progressive Auto Sales Arena. Sting legend Steven Stamkos was in attendance to see his number 91 retired to the rafters. A sold-out crowd packed the house. Wearing amazing throwback uniforms in honor of Stamkos’ time in Sarnia, the Sting put on a show.

In the first period, Windsor forward Luke Boka got the first goal of the night, but it was all they would get.

Midway through the opening, Sting forward Anthony Salinitri scored his first of two. Salinitri was “Anthony on the Spot” at the side of the Spitfires crease. Connor Schlichting’s point shot rebounded out to the right of Windsor goalie Lucas Patton, and Salinitri whacked it home.

Sting captain Jordan Kyrou displayed an incredible show of skill with four minutes left in the first. On the powerplay, Kyrou cut laterally across the Spitfires’ zone, deked through the defence, and went top shelf on the Windsor netminder.

In the second, Salinitri and Kyrou repeated the greatness. Salinitri scored just before the twelve minute mark, and Kyrou followed up a few minutes later.

Salinitri’s second goal came shorthanded. Racing up the ice on a breakaway, Salinitri was hauled down by the Spitfires’ chasing defenceman. Despite being hooked down to the ice, Salinitri scored anyway, sliding the puck through the Windsor goalie. Best way to describe it is to just show it.

In the third, Sean Josling scored a pair of his own. They were Josling’s fifteenth and sixteenth of the season. The final score was 6-1 on a night honouring the greatest Sting skater of all time.

Justin Fazio stopped twenty-four shots in goal to pick up the win.
