The Sarnia Sting visited the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on Saturday night.
A battle between the Canadian Hockey League’s number one and number four ranked teams, it was a marquee matchup at the Essar Centre.
In a back-and-forth first period, Hounds defenceman Anthony DeMeo scored the only goal. It came just fifty-three seconds into the matchup. For DeMeo, it was also his first in the OHL.
Seven minor penalties were split across both teams in the opening frame. It meant a lot of open ice and ton of scoring chances. The league’s top two statistical goaltenders – Justin Fazio for the Sting and Mathew Villalta for the Greyhounds – stood tall.
In the second, things opened up.
Soo forward Joe Carroll scored another quick one for the Soo, tallying forty-seven seconds into the middle frame.
Sting forward Anthony Salinitri brought the visiting side within one. On an odd man rush, Salinitri and linemate Drake Rymsha combined for Salinitri’s twenty-fifth of the season. Salinitri sent a laser top shelf past Villalta. It was a 2-1 game.
Midway through the second, the tide appeared to turn. Hounds forward Hayden Verbeek continued his hot weekend, scoring his twenty-sixth of the year. It was the shot that broke the camel’s back.
Sault Ste. Marie went on to score four more unanswered goals across the second and third periods. Rasmus Sandin had two, and Taylor Raddysh and Barrett Hayton added single markers of their own. The final score this evening was 7-1.
Fazio made thirty saves in the Sting crease on thirty-seven shots against.
