GAME REPORT | Sting Drop 4-2 New Year’s Eve Battle to Knights

The Sarnia Sting hosted the London Knights on Sunday afternoon for a classic New Year’s Eve matchup. It was the third Battle of the 402 this season.

With the Sting having taken the first two of this season’s matchups, the Knights changed things up and emerged with the road win.

In the first period, Sting forward Anthony Salinitri opened up the afternoon’s scoring. Salinitri drove hard with the puck through the neutral zone and towards Knights goaltender Jordan Kooy. With a London defender draped all over him, Salinitri pushed through, put the puck on goal, and it deflected into the back of the net.

Midway through the first, Knights forward Harrison Cottam scored his second of the season. Cottam took a shot from the top of the faceoff circle off the draw, and it found a way by Sting goalie Justin Fazio.

Tempers were high throughout the first period. Seemingly every whistle resulted in some scrums. The rivalry was alive and well.

In the second, all was relatively quiet until Sting forward Jordan Ernst gave Sarnia a 2-1 lead. Ernst wheeled around the London net, tossed a shot on goal, and it squeezed past the Knights’ goaltender.

It was in the third period that things started to turn in London’s favour. With Fazio acting as a brick wall between the Sting pipes, London moved actively throughout Sarnia’s zone. Knights forward Sam Miletic scored his twelfth of the season six minutes in.

Cliff Pu scored the go-ahead goal for London with just a minute remaining. The Knights were gifted with a fortunate powerplay on a late hooking call. Despite the Sting’s best protests, London took the man advantage and ended the game. Pu added an empty-netter to close things out.

Fazio finished the afternoon stopping 26 of 29 shots faced.
