The Sarnia Sting visited the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday night.
It was game two of our Western conference quarterfinal series. In front of a large crowd at the Dow Event Center, these two division rivals went head-to-head.
Opening up the scoring was Spirit captain Damien Giroux. With the Spirit on the man advantage, Giroux got an extra step at the offensive blueline and broke in on Sting netminder Ethan Langevin. Giroux made a quick deke and tucked it in to give the home side a 1-0 lead.
Saginaw rookie forward Cole Perfetti doubled the lead. Perfetti and linemate Owen Tippett came in on a two-on-one, and Perfetti completed the passing play. It was 2-0 after one period of play.
Late in the second stanza, Tippett extended the score. Tippett released a hard shot from the top of the right circle that got past Langevin.
Saginaw defenceman Bode Wilde made it 4-0 early in the third with a sneaky wrist shot.
But, the Sting were determined to start a late charge.
Sarnia rookie forward Jacob Perreault recorded his first OHL postseason goal, and it was a beauty. Perreault soared in over the blueline, strong-armed the defender, and deked Spirit goalie Ivan Prosvetov. Perreault’s tally brought the score to 4-1.
Giroux responded shortly after with his second of the evening for Saginaw. Tonight’s final score was 5-1.
Langevin made numerous key stops throughout the game. Saginaw’s powerplay unit was just clicking on all cylinders. We’ll look to even the series as we return to home ice!
